About Us About Us
The Mullet River Model Works grew out of a desire to have well detailed model kits. Like all small model manufacturers I am a modeler also. In addition I have done considerable work for railroad museums on full size trains. This work has included rebuilding work, conservation assessments, and project planning. The knowledge gained doing this work has been brought into my modeling.

To produce my models I start with railroad drawings from historical societies or personal collections. If those drawings are not available then the prototype is measured. Scale drawings are produced and from those the general construction of the model is determined. Wood parts of the prototype are created in the model using wood. The metal parts of the model are created using metals and plastics. The advent of computer controlled machines has allowed me to cut intricate wood parts that were not possible before. For example the window units in my buildings are comprised of 8 laminations that make it possible for the lower sash to operate. This gives your model more life and allows you to show off the interior. Both plastic and metal are used for the metal prototype parts as they both paint up to look like metal parts. Here again the computer has advanced model manufacturing. I am currently doing a lot of brass etching for the kits. This technology starts with computer generated drawings that are turned into laser exposed negatives. These are much more accurate and detailed than hand drawn art work. For rivets I am using etching to produce the rivets or an etched mark where a punched rivet would go. The marked location for a punched rivet is a technology used extensively in England. A small etch in the metal locates your rivet punch. The etchings are folded along pre etched lines to form channels, angles, and other shapes for the models.

Lastly the models are designed to be assembled relatively easily with hand tools. Since I am a modeler and have to put the models together myself the need for special fixtures becomes apparent. The fixtures are provided with the kits.

Thanks for your interest in Mullet River Model Works kits. Send me a photo and note of your finished model. I will put it up on the photo page. If you have your own site send me a link and I will put it on the links page.

See you at the model show.
