Mullet River Model Works announces their latest kit, a Chicago and Northwestern cupola caboose. These cars were the standard on the C&NW from the early 1880’s until the late 1940’s. When first designed the cars had 4 windows on each side and two windows on each end. The 1883 drawing for these cars shows the cupola platform suspended from the roof and no closets. In the early 1900’s the cars were being built with steel underframes and interior closets under the cupola platform. Also at this time the 4th window on the right side was gone and a 5th window on the left side appeared. By 1940 the end windows were disappearing. In the late 1940’s the cupola windows were disappearing. Also about this time some cars were being converted to bay window cars. The steel underframe varies a little between the rebuilt cars and the new cars. The Chicago and Northwestern Historical Society has a good 3 part article and a separate article on the CStPM&O bay window rebuilds. These articles may be available as reprints from them. There is a car at the Illinois Railway Museum that was measured for the underframe and there is a car at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum. Lastly there are some good photos at the Library of Congress web site under the Farm Services Administration section, taken by Jack Delano.

Laser cut plywood construction. This kit includes a urethane underframe that can be used for Proto 48, scale couplers or can be trimmed to accommodate the Kadee coupler box. The side windows on the car body operate up and down. The end doors are separate pieces and can be glued in the open position to show off the interior of the car.

The Colorado and Southern was owned by the CB&Q railroad and had narrow gage as well as standard gage operations. This model is of the standard gage caboose. These cars were similar to the CB&Q 28' cars. The cupolas had 2 side windows and not one like the CB&Q cars and the interior had coach type seating. The seats made into bunks. This change in seating resulted in different spacing of the side windows on the car body.
